Introduction

Maps in Culdcept The First define the battlefield where dice rolls, territory control, and card strategies combine. All 7 maps feature unique terrain, territory distributions, and difficulty ratings that favor different deck archetypes. Map knowledge is essential — choosing the right deck for the map is half the battle. Maps vary in size (30-60 territories), starting positions, and special terrain features like teleporters, blocked paths, and elemental regions.

Core Mechanics

Each map has a defined path system where players move via dice rolls. Some maps have branching paths, allowing strategic routing choices. Territories are pre-assigned element affinities — Fire territories boost Fire creatures, etc. Magic Book symbols spawn in fixed locations on each map. Castle positions vary by map (some have central castles, others corner castles). Some maps feature terrain features like mountains (movement penalties), water (creature restrictions), and fortresses (defensive bonuses). Map-specific events can trigger on certain dice rolls.

Challenges

Larger maps slow down games and favor control strategies. Smaller maps accelerate games and favor rush strategies. Maps with restricted movement paths limit route options and can be exploited by area-denial strategies. Element-locked territories punish off-element decks. Maps with few Magic Book territories slow down high-cost card strategies. Some maps have ambush positions that favor defensive creatures. New players often misjudge map difficulty — high-difficulty maps like Dragon Roost and Abyssal Depths have stronger creature encounters that can end games early.
