Unlike traditional card games where deck archetypes are rigid, Culdcept's card+board fusion creates fluid strategies that adapt to map layout, dice rolls, and opponent choices. The four primary archetypes — Rush Aggro, Toll Control, Element Tribal, and Combo Spell — each require different card pools, mulligan strategies, and map preferences. Understanding deck archetypes helps you build effective counters and identify your preferred playstyle.

Tier List for Deck Archetypes

Core Mechanics

Deck construction in Culdcept requires 60 cards minimum. The deck is divided by card type — typically 25-30 creatures for territory defense, 15-20 items for creature enhancement, and 10-15 spells for utility and removal. Element distribution matters: pure-element decks (mono-fire, mono-water) gain consistency but lose flexibility, while multi-element decks gain options but dilute synergies. The opening hand mulligan lets you swap up to 3 cards. Cards with high synergy should be kept together — Holy Grail + Dragonslayer combos, Hurricane + Wind creature setups. The deck shuffle is fully random with no manipulation effects.

Challenges

Mono-element decks lose to hard counter elements (Fire deck loses to Water deck). Rush decks struggle against high-HP creatures and AoE spells. Control decks fold to aggressive rush if they don't draw board clears early. Combo decks are inconsistent without the right opening hand. Decks heavy on creatures can be shut down by Hurricane or Meteor AoE. Item-heavy decks fold to Dispel effects. Every archetype has natural predators — building a deck without considering counters leaves you vulnerable. The best decks include 1-2 silver bullet cards for common threats.
